Duke Black Law Students Association

Why did you choose Duke Law?

I chose Duke Law because of the opportunities available, namely the unique JD/LLM program, including the academic programs abroad, language courses at the law school, and renowned international faculty.

Did BLSA’s Admitted Students Weekend event have any impact on your decision?

While I was pretty much sold on attending Duke by the time I finished my first Admitted Students events, the BLSA event definitely tipped me over the edge.  For me, the feeling of community present, as well as the open arms with which I was received, assured me that I was making the right decision.

What interested you in becoming a member of BLSA?

Previously, I was Vice President of my undergraduate chapter of the National Black Law Students Association, so I had a particular interest in continuing my involvement.  Additionally, at Duke Law there’s a true commitment to the organization, not to mention an energy that I have not witnessed before.  It’s almost contagious.  I can’t help but want to be involved.

What are your expectations of BLSA during your 1L year and your three years at Duke Law?

I expect BLSA to be that organization that is the voice for African-Americans specifically and minorities generally at Duke and beyond.  I expect BLSA to be the community that fosters growth and confidence as each student-member develops professionally and personally.  I expect BLSA to be a positive influence on those to follow.

What is your favorite Durham restaurant?

My favorite Durham restaurant is either Mediterra Grill or Firebirds Grill at Southpoint Mall.  I like to get the gyro wrap with tabouli at Mediterra.

What is your favorite Durham activity?

My favorite Durham activity is cooking for the Ronald McDonald House.  I like cooking for the Ronald McDonald House because it gives me an opportunity to do what I love – be in the kitchen – while helping families in a small way, but in a way that makes a big difference to them.  Often, they’re tired of the same old pizza and spaghetti, so I like coming in with a different meal like chicken alfredo and apple crumble.  Like I said, it’s a small thing but I’ve found that that small thing enhances their stay as their children are treated at Duke Hospital.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to read for fun, and when I have the time I like to participate in boot camp, bake, and watch any and all lawyer shows since I now can understand some things they mention!
